<image:title>Portfolio - Invasive Herps Triptych</image:title>
<image:caption>Pen and watercolor on paper Official Write-Up by Mattias Lanas (artist), Geoff Giller (science writer), and Max Lambert (herpetologist): Merely existing among a city’s buildings, roads, and pollution is something of a superpower for wildlife. However, many reptiles and amphibians can indeed live and even thrive in urban areas. While numerous species have been decimated by the conversion of rural landscapes to the lawns, pavement, and buildings comprising our cities and suburbs, some species have taken those changes in stride. This triptych highlights three such species: the American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis), and red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans). All are native to some part of the United States but have vigorously colonized far from where they originate. And all are frequently found in cities and suburbs, often aided by human activity and land development. For other species, like spotted turtles, wood turtles, whiptail lizards, western skinks, horned lizards, legless lizards, wood frogs, pickerel frogs, and western toads, pollution or asphalt can be insurmountable challenges. Animals like western pond turtles, red-bellied turtles, western fence lizards, red-legged frogs, and Asiatic toads are eaten by or cannot compete with urban bullfrogs, sliders, and anoles. These many species become ‘ghosts’ — depicted as silhouettes in the triptych — relegated to tiny patches of suitable city habitat or the urban fringe, their presence overshadowed by the others’ success.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Native Blue Bee</image:title>
<image:caption>Gouache on paper This California native bee (Osmia sp.) was painted from a pinned UC Santa Cruz Natural History collection specimen. I spent hours studying and drawing the bee under the microscope—it measures less than a centimeter in length—before eventually creating the finished piece. To draw small organisms I often rely on a camera lucida attachment, a device which allows me to “trace” what I am seeing through the lens onto a piece of paper without having to constantly flit between scope and paper. This was my first gouache painting and the one that made me fall in love with this bright and flexible medium. This piece was chosen to represent the 2017 Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History exhibit “The Art of Nature” in all publicity materials.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Graphite, watercolor, and digital Illustration to accompany scientific research by the Prakash Lab at Stanford University. Galerucella nymphaeae is a species of lily pad beetle that uses a strange method of locomotion to effectively waterski across the surface of a pond. The Prakash lab was studying the physics of this locomotion, which seems to be unique and which allows the beetle to quickly flit between lily pads in its environment. The lab’s research was featured in the Science section of the New York Times.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stippled pen & ink on paper A stippled rendering of a Ten-lined June Beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata) about to take flight. I have encountered these wonderfully patterned beetles on more than one occasion in the Sierra Nevada of California, USA, often buzzing angrily near a light at night-time. They are large, compared to their relatives in that part of the world, have wonderfully intricate, feathered antennae, and will emit an adorable squeaking sound when held. This piece shows the beetle’s open elytra (wing cases) and still unfolding wings underneath. It was a challenge and a gratifying experience creating the effect of semi-translucency and iridescence in the wings. In all, this piece took approximately thirty-two hours to stipple (that was a lot of dots…).</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Passiflora Illustrator’s Trompe L’Oeil</image:title>
<image:caption>Gouache on illustration board Trompe l’oeil is French for “trick of the eye” and is the name given to this particular format of painting, where the subject is made to look as if it is real life. This effect is achieved by painting subjects that are generally more flat in shape and by highlighting small cast shadows under and around objects. I chose to depict the cluttered desk of a botanical illustrator in the process of researching the genus Passiflora. I painted in a passionflower reference drawing by Maria Sybilla Merian (one of my idols), a hypothetical sketch comparing two different sections within the Passiflora genus, and hypothetical written notes about these plants partially obscured by another document. The butterfly depicted is a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae), which uses passionflowers as a host plant, and the vine cutting with flower (being kept alive in a vial of water) is a common ornamental hybrid of Passiflora mixta. This piece has been chosen on multiple occasions to represent the field of science illustration in exhibitions and publicity materials, including through California State University Monterey Bay, the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a feature in the Passiflora Online Journal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acrylic on illustration board I painted this Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) twig as a still-life exercise, working to capture detail, texture, depth and value accurately. Coast live oaks are native to the Mediterranean climate of California and can be distinguished from their cousins by their prickly leaf edges. These oaks are an iconic part of San Francisco Bay Area landscapes and play an important role in their ecosystems as a keystone species for local fauna.</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Red Abalone</image:title>
<image:caption>Colored pencil on paper The Red Abalone (Haliotis rufescens) is a species of large, marine mollusk from the Western Coast of North America. In California, it is common to see iridescent abalone shells in people’s homes along the coast, and I was taken by the size and beauty of these treasures. According to archeologists, these mollusks have been eaten since prehistoric times and were an important food source for native American groups. Unfortunately, a history of introduced invasive disease agents couple with unsustainable harvesting has taken a significant toll on this and other abalone populations. Wild abalone are now protected, with only limited take available to licensed fishermen. This colored pencil drawing was done from life and was made especially difficult because of the shell’s iridescence—I had to keep my head very still in order to hold the same angle of reflected light the entire time. It was a fun challenge!</image:caption>

<image:title>Portfolio - Defaunation / Defaunación</image:title>
<image:caption>Watercolor and digital I created this piece in 2015 for one of my graduate school assignments as a visual representation of the term “defaunation.” This term was coined by my mentor and esteemed ecologist Dr. Rodolfo Dirzo at Stanford University and is defined as the loss of megafauna from a given ecosystem. This piece suggests a human element (the pencil eraser) in the defaunation of the African Savannah and aims to evoke the sense of sadness that comes with the extinction of a species. In 2018 the world shook with the loss of last the last male northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni). Although this piece was not created with any particular rhino species in mind, it still serves as a memory for the loss of the Northern White and raises awareness for the extirpation of some of Africa’s most emblematic species.

<image:caption>Pen and watercolor This page came from my field journal. I sat down in front of this beautiful Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) plant in order to intensely observe and sketch it. Drawing, in combination with written word, is an excellent way to capture a lot of information in a small space. Sketches convey a lot of information about the shape of the plant, its flowers, leaves, colors, etc., while the writing allows me to jot down measurements, my questions, and more conceptual observations.
