Mattias Lanas grew up in Santiago, Chile, where family visits to the seashore fostered a love for natural history. After graduating with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Earth Systems from Stanford, he completed the Science Illustration Certificate Graduate Program at California State University, Monterey Bay. Today he teaches art classes, leads field sketching trips, and works on illustration commissions. In 2020 he studied scientific and natural history illustration on a Fulbright Award at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris. He is now based at his home in Bogotá, Colombia. When not in the studio Mattias can be found “botanizing” and searching for rare plants, reading about insects, or doing pottery.

Mattias Lanas creció en Santiago, Chile, donde visitas a la costa con su familia fomentó un amor por la naturaleza. Habiendo graduado con licenciatura y maestría en ciencias del programa Earth Systems de Stanford University, completó el Programa de Ilustración Científica de California State University, Monterey Bay. Hoy en día enseña clases de arte, guia excursiones de bosquejo en el campo, y trabaja en ilustraciones comisionadas. En 2020 estudió ilustración científica con una beca Fulbright en el Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris. Ahora está basado en su hogar en Bogotá, Colombia. Cuando no en su taller uno puede encontrar a Mattias en el campo estudiando flora nativa y buscando plantas raras, leyendo sobre los insectos, o dedicándose a la alfarería.
